MD Dual-Degree Programs Application Guide

General Rule for MPH or MA Dual-Degree Applicants 

You must be admitted to the Stritch School of Medicine's Doctor of Medicine program to matriculate in the MPH or MA dual-degree program. Applicants may apply either simultaneously to the MD and dual-degree programs, or after matriculating as a Stritch medical student (timing varies by program) 

How to Apply to MD Dual-Degree Programs

MD/MPH (Public Health)

MD/MPH Overview

MD/MPH Application Steps 

1. Apply to Stritch via AMCAS (MD Program) 

    • Submit the AMCAS primary application listing ♒Twitte推特账号 | 2019-2024年老账号 | 2FA开启 | 邮箱可用 | 支持auth_token登录+2fa登录 Stritch School of Medicine 
    • Complete the Stritch secondary application, which is automatically sent to all eligible applicants after AMCAS submission 
    • Indicate interest in the MD/MPH where prompted (if applying simultaneously) 

2. Submit a separate MPH application 

3. Plan program timing (M0 Year) 

    • Most MD/MPH students complete MPH coursework before starting medical school  (“M0 year”) 
    • MPH coursework includes 42 credits, with some credits transferable from M3/M4 electives 

4. Receive independent admission decisions 

    • Admission decisions are made independently for: 
      • MD (Stritch) and 
      • MPH (Parkinson School) 
    • Acceptance to both programs is required to pursue the dual degree

MD/MA in Bioethics & Health Policy

MD/MA Overview

Format: Fully online MA coursework 
Partner Unit: Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics
Typical Timing: Concurrent with MD
Required Applications: Stritch School of Medicine and the Bioethics Graduate Program

MD/MA Application Steps

1. Apply to Stritch via AMCAS (MD Program)

  • Express interest in the MD/MA Bioethics dual-degree (if applying concurrently) 

2. Apply separately to the MA in Bioethics Program 

3. Meet Bioethics application requirements. Applicants typically submit: 

  • Online application 
  • Transcripts 
  • Letters of recommendation 
  • Statement of purpose 
  • Writing sample 

4. Coordinate timing with medical school 

  • MA coursework is  online, allowing completion during medical school 
  • Students complete 30 credits total 
  • Some independent study credits may align with MD coursework 

5. Receive independent admission decisions 

Acceptance to both the MD and dual-degree programs is required.

MD/PhD

MD/PhD Overview

MD/PhD Application Steps

1. Apply to the MD/PhD Program

  • Submit the AMCAS primary application, selecting the MD/PhD application option.
  • Complete the Stritch secondary application, which is automatically sent to all eligible applicants after AMCAS submission. Applications are considered incomplete until the Stritch School of Medicine secondary application has been received.
  • Applications are accepted from June 1 through November 15 each year.

2. Meet the MD/PhD Program Requirements

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree, with evidence of a strong scientific background and research experience, to be considered eligible for the program.
  • Applicants enrolled in a graduate program must complete that program before beginning medical school. If this is not possible, graduate students must withdraw from their graduate program before applying for admission to the Stritch School of Medicine.
  • In addition to meaningful and sustained research experience, competitive applicants must have a solid undergraduate record with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and an MCAT composite score at or above the 75th-80th percentile.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold a permanent resident visa, or be eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the time of application.
  • Applicants who have taken all their undergraduate coursework outside the United States or Canada must complete at least one year of full-time study in an accredited American college or university before applying to the Stritch School of Medicine.

3. Interview (If Invited)

  • Selected applicants will be contacted beginning in September to schedule interviews.
  • The interview is a two-day process.

4. Receive admission decision

  • Admissions decisions are made after all interviews are completed in January.
  • Applicants who have completed interviews but have not been contacted are placed on an active alternate list and may be notified of acceptance into the program until the matriculating class is finalized.
